The Côtes-du-Rhône, both elegant and persistent, displays admirable freshness on the finish, making it already approachable.
95 points, La Revue du Vin de France
A newer chapter from one of the Rhône’s most historic addresses, the Château Grillet Côtes du Rhône Blanc offers a glimpse into the house style beyond its tiny monopole. Under the Pinault family’s stewardship, the focus remains firmly on precision and site, with fruit sourced from carefully selected vineyards in the northern Rhône, grown on granite and schist soils that echo the character of the estate itself. It is Viognier led, but shaped to show freshness and balance rather than sheer richness.
The 2023 vintage brings a vibrant, expressive profile. White peach and apricot sit at the core, lifted by mandarin peel and a touch of preserved lemon. There is a floral thread of honeysuckle and jasmine, alongside a subtle savoury edge, almond, crushed herbs and a faint hint of ginger spice. It feels aromatic but controlled, never tipping into excess.
On the palate it is textured yet finely drawn, with a line of acidity that gives the wine energy and direction. Stone fruit flows into citrus and lightly savoury notes, with a gentle mineral imprint adding length. Compared to the flagship Château Grillet, this is more immediate and open, but it still carries that hallmark polish and quiet complexity.
Winemaking is handled with the same care as the grand vin, with restrained oak used to build texture rather than dominate. The result is a wine that feels complete and harmonious, offering both approachability and a clear sense of place.
It pairs beautifully with dishes that balance richness and freshness. Grilled prawns with lemon, roast chicken with herbs, or seared scallops all work effortlessly. It also handles lightly spiced dishes well, where the aromatics can shine.
Enjoy it in its youth for its brightness and perfume, though a few years in bottle will bring more rounded, nutty and savoury notes while maintaining its balance.
