Wines from Vouvray, which can vary from dry to sweet, can be confusing for consumers because the level of sweetness is not always clear from the label. Here, the back label correctly identifies this winsome wine as dry. Made entirely from organically-grown Chenin Blanc, the ripe and round Silex d'Orfeuilles reflects the warmth of the vintage. A hint of minerality peaks through, adding complexity. Good acidity allowed it to stand up to hamburgers coated with a spicy mayonnaise. Who says you can't drink white wine with meat?

A pale straw colour with bright green reflections shimmers in the glass. Aromas open with lime zest, green apple and white peach layered with gooseberry, fresh herbs and a gentle smoky flint note. There is a lovely sense of precision and lift, quietly complex rather than overtly aromatic.

The palate is dry and finely structured, delivering citrus and orchard fruit flavours framed by vibrant acidity and a firm mineral spine. Subtle nuances of grapefruit pith, wet stone and saline freshness build through the mid palate, leading to a long, clean finish that feels both energetic and composed. Delicious in its youth for its clarity and drive, this Touraine Sauvignon Blanc will continue to evolve over five to eight years, gaining texture and savoury depth.
