2023 Domenica Nebbiolo Rose, Beechworth

A strong contender for the best pink wine I drank all year, this tightly textured, long and linear rose is a powerful rebuttal to the suggestion that such wines are simply giggle juice. It has the alluringly fragrant lift you want when you reach for rosé but there's a seriousness of structure, a gentle grip of tannin, that reminds you seduction only works when satisfaction is delivered at the end.

Domenica Rosé is built from select parcels of fruit fermented in neutral barrels shaping a complex wine worthy of your attention. It has been featured by The WineFront and Halliday magazine as one of Australia's leading rosé wines. The 2023 is no exception to its predecessors, made with intention as a serious and refreshing style.

Domenica sits 460m above sea level atop the granite ridge sweeping away to the south west of Beechworth. The wines are vividly reflective of their origin, a gripping mineral texture encasing the mature vine vitality of the varietals chosen to express it.

The fruit was basket pressed, juice assembled then racked to barrel with some solids retained. Left on skins for 15 minutes or so. Fermentation was allowed to proceed using wild yeast in old barriques at medium temperature. Malolactic was arresed and on completion of fermetantion/clarification the wine was racked to stainless steel.

Winemaking is traditional. Taste is more important than numbers. The yeasts comes from the site, not a packet. Pressings, solids and lees all play their part completing the picture. The wine is carefully maintained in oak bariques before being bottled unfiltered.
