The 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon is punchy and youthful, with well-focused aromas of blackcurrant and licorice, while dried herbs add detail. New oak, sweet fruit and manicured tannins are underscored by firm, slightly edgy acidity. A modern style to enjoy over the short to medium term. Drink to 2032.
92 points Angus Hughson for Vinous, January 2026
Nigel Ludlow started Evoi from two barrels of Chardonnay made in his lounge room in Margaret River in 2007. The name comes from the ecstatic cry of the Maenads, the female followers of Bacchus, and the winery has ambition to match it. Nigel has built one of Margaret River's most acclaimed boutique operations in less than two decades, earning a Halliday 5 Red Star producer rating.
The 2023 growing season was great for Cabernet Sauvignon. A cool, late start followed by a long, dry, mild summer allowed fruit to ripen slowly and retain natural acidity. The result is a vintage that offers both power and composure.
The grapes for this wine were handpicked and fermented as small parcels with manual plunging. The wine was then pressed to a combination of stainless steel and French barriques to finish primary and malolactic ferment, then further maturation for 12 months. The final blend incorporates 10% Malbec.
Bright and clear aromas of blackcurrants and blueberry supported by licorice, black olive and herbal notes. The fresh and sweetly fruited palate has an immediate impact and is framed by well-mannered tannins and warm barrel notes. The wine is built for enjoyment in the near future.
Cabernets are the perfect polite dinner guest, offering a nice savoury backdrop to your efforts. For the in-laws, seared venison loin in a juniper and cocoa nib crust, with a smoky roasted beetroot salad. For a low-luxe date night at the kitchen counter, wagyu beef burgers topped with melted Gruyère, crispy pancetta and peppery aioli on a toasted brioche bun.
