Domaine Faiveley, established in 1825 and still family-owned, is one of Burgundy’s most respected producers, with holdings that span from the Côte de Nuits to the Côte Chalonnaise. The Mercurey Vieilles Vignes comes from old-vine Pinot Noir parcels in Mercurey, the largest and one of the most celebrated appellations of the Côte Chalonnaise. These mature vines, many several decades old, produce naturally low yields, concentrating flavour and structure in the fruit. Mercurey’s limestone-clay soils and relatively warm microclimate give Pinot Noir both ripeness and a firm mineral backbone, while Faiveley’s careful vineyard management and traditional winemaking ensure a wine of purity and depth.

The Faiveley Mercurey Vieilles Vignes pours a vivid ruby and opens with aromas of black cherry, redcurrant, and wild strawberry layered with violet, subtle spice, and a touch of forest floor. On the palate, it is medium-bodied yet structured, with juicy red and dark berry fruit framed by fine-grained tannins and refreshing acidity. Notes of clove, cedar, and earth from ageing in French oak add complexity without overpowering the fruit. The finish is long and balanced, combining elegance with the satisfying grip that old vines can deliver.

It pairs beautifully with roast duck breast, herb-crusted lamb, mushroom and thyme tart, or grilled salmon. Semi-hard cheeses like Comté or Cantal also work well. While drinking well now, it will develop more savoury, earthy complexity with 7 to 10 years of cellaring.
