2023 Flowstone Chardonnay, Margaret River

Super flinty this vintage, and quite racy, but also with sulphides slightly pinching the finish. Yet there's plenty of stuffing: think citrus and white stone fruit, creamy, fluffy lees, toasty sweet oak and a lemony saline tang. Drink to 2032.

Pungent notes of buttered toast, vanilla, cashew and fresh thyme lead into a palate where seashore flavours mix with lemon curd and brioche notes. There's a briny edge to the wine, reminiscent of some Jura wines. It offers an interesting lens onto modern-day chardonnay that's high on savoury and seashore flavours. Drink to 2031.

This is a generous and mouth filling Chardonnay with a refined chalky line of acidity extending the fruit flavours, giving the wine impressive length. We would pair this with pan-seared bugs or prawns and a garlic, lemon, and hazelnut butter, or miso-glazed mulloway served in a ginger-dashi broth with blanched samphire.

The 2023 vintage delivered excellent Chardonnay quality in Margaret River.

This wine is a southern Margaret River blend of Forest Grove and Karridale fruit. The grapes were hand-harvested, whole bunch pressed and fermented with indigenous yeasts in French oak barriques of which a quarter were new. The wine underwent partial malolactic fermentation and was aged for eleven months on lees with periodic lees stirring.

Based in the Forest Grove area, they also lease a vineyard further down south in Karridale, and source some fruit from Wilyabrup. The names of their wines pay tribute to the stunning geological formations of the region.
