The 2023 Langhe Nebbiolo Claré JC is a very pretty, nuanced wine. Crushed flowers, cranberry, rose petal, mint and dried herbs all grace the 2023. Readers will find a very serious wine, one that vastly overachieves at its price. Early picking, vinification with a touch of stems and brief aging yield a fresh, aromatic Nebbiolo done in a style meant to recall notes found in Thomas Jefferson's impressions of Nebbiolo well before the birth of the formal appellation system. As good as the wine is, it could also be a far more serious wine, if that were the intent. Tasted blind, nobody would guess this is a Langhe Nebbiolo.

G.D. Vajra Clare J.C. Langhe Nebbiolo from Piedmont is a fun, approachable expression of Nebbiolo that offers exceptional value without sacrificing quality. Crafted by the respected G.D. Vajra winery, founded in the 1970s by Aldo Vajra, this wine is a reflection of the winery’s commitment to producing wines that showcase the true character of the Langhe region while maintaining a focus on sustainability and traditional winemaking practices. Aldo, along with his daughter Clare and winemaker Gian Piero, leads the estate, ensuring every bottle reflects their passion for the land and the grape.

The Langhe Nebbiolo is made from carefully selected fruit grown in the Langhe hills, known for their distinctive soils and microclimates that provide the perfect conditions for Nebbiolo to flourish. G.D. Vajra utilizes organic practices in the vineyards, promoting biodiversity and healthy soils, and combines this with traditional winemaking methods that allow the grapes to express themselves clearly. Fermentation occurs in stainless steel tanks, preserving the fresh fruit flavors and purity of the Nebbiolo grape, and the wine is aged in a combination of large oak casks and stainless steel to maintain balance and finesse.

In the glass, the Clare J.C. Langhe Nebbiolo presents a vibrant ruby-red color, hinting at its lively character. On the nose, it’s filled with aromas of ripe red berries, cherry, raspberry, and strawberry complemented by floral notes of rose and violet, typical of Nebbiolo. There are also subtle hints of dried herbs, tobacco, and a touch of earthiness, adding depth to the aromatic profile. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied with soft tannins and bright acidity, making it both approachable and fresh. The fruit flavors are vibrant, with red cherries and strawberries leading the way, balanced by earthy and herbal nuances. The finish is clean and smooth, with a lingering note of red fruit and a hint of spice.

This Langhe Nebbiolo is an excellent value, offering an affordable introduction to the Nebbiolo grape while still providing the complexity and character that the variety is known for. It pairs wonderfully with a wide range of foods, from pasta with tomato-based sauces to roasted meats, grilled vegetables, or even a cheese board featuring semi-aged cheeses. Whether you're enjoying it on a casual evening or with a more formal meal, this wine brings a touch of Piedmont’s elegance to any occasion.
