Gérard Boulay Clos de Beaujeu Sancerre is a benchmark expression of Chavignol terroir and a masterclass in precision, texture and mineral tension. This historic vineyard dates back to the Middle Ages and is one of Sancerre’s most revered crus. Set on the steep Kimmeridgian limestone slopes of Chavignol, Clos de Beaujeu yields wines that are powerful, structured and built to age — and in the hands of Gérard Boulay, the result is nothing short of exceptional.
Boulay, whose family has been rooted in Chavignol since the 1300s, farms organically and vinifies with a minimalist approach. Native yeasts, old barrels, no fining or filtration, and minimal sulphur are all part of his philosophy, allowing the vineyard to speak with clarity and intensity. The fruit from Clos de Beaujeu typically ripens later, giving the wine depth and energy.
Expect lifted aromatics of lemon zest, white peach, crushed shell and subtle fennel. On the palate, it’s layered and textural, with vibrant acidity, chalky grip and a long, mineral-saline finish. It’s one of those rare Sauvignon Blancs that can be both racy and powerful, youthful and deeply complex.
Perfect with goat cheese tart, grilled langoustines, or fennel and citrus salad. While beautiful now, it will evolve brilliantly over 10 to 15 years, gaining weight and savoury depth.
