Welcoming from the outset, with a faintly smoky, charry sense to the nose, a suggestion of crumbled earth and forest floor as an understorey. Then comes the fruit – a fresh crush of purple plum, vibrant flavours, a reverb of that initial blacksmithy char, and an intricate weave of fine yet sticky tannins with a lip-smacking finish. Its depth with a confident vitality gives this a special sensibility and a formidable future.

95 points Tony Love for Wine Pilot, July 2025

The famous Filsell Shiraz from their Barossa Valley vineyard with vines planted over a century ago, is still cracking value and always a delicious drink. There is a richness and generosity immediately apparent with this wine, which shows impeccable extraction. The colour is inky dark in the centre with a dark purple rim. We have notes of plums, black fruits, soy, mulberries, coffee grinds, cassis and chocolate, though some red fruits, raspberries and cherries, drift in and out. A supple texture here and juicy acidity, this is finely crafted with the oak deftly handled, giving the wine a flick of a vanillin note. Firm tannins sit comfortably towards the end of a very long finish. This will easily handle a decade, even two, in the cellar, and likely continue to improve over that time. Drink to 2045.

95 points Ken Gargett for Wine Pilot, May 2025

Deep crimson. Ripe blackberry, damson plum and black cherry aromas with hints of baking spices, roasting meats, Old Gold chocolate, panforte, olive tapenade, oak spice, dried tobacco and earth. Full bodied, with a swell of ripe black fruits daubed with wood spice and earthy tones, with fine, silty tannins, a light meaty facet and plenty of sustain on the finish. Drink to 2041.

93+ points Dave Brookes for Halliday Wine Companion, July 2026

The 2023 Shiraz Filsell is approachable with its fruit pastille and dark cherry primary aromas lifted by red earthy tones and sweet oak. This has good volume of flavor and density underpinned by a lighter tannin frame, making it ready to enjoy now. The 2023 is a great result from the vintage. Drink to 2034.

92 points Angus Hughson for Vinous, August 2025

Saturated purple-red colour; it smells of blackberry—and tannin. A big, brawny wine with lashings of mouth-coating tannins and bold albeit fairly straightforward flavour. A lasting, chewy grip on the finish. A solid shiraz that would take some ageing well. Drink to 2038.

92 points Huon Hooke for The Real Review, June 2025

The Burge family’s Filsell vineyard is located between Lyndoch and Williamstown and is home to centenarian Shiraz vines planted in 1920 supplying fruit for two Grant Burge classics, Filsell and Meshach.

About this producer

Grant Burge Wines was established in 1988 by fifth-generation winemaker Grant with his wife Helen. Today, this large Barossa operation is part of the global mammoth Vinarchy, established in 2025 through the merger of the already large Accolade Wines and Pernod Ricard Winemakers.

The brand continues to be highly regarded, largely due to the structural split in 2015. This saw Vinarchy retaining the brand rights and the winery facilities, while the Burge family returned to its historical 1855-roots as farmers of their excellent 130-hectare holdings in the southern subregions of the Barossa, now acting as one of the key, high-quality contract grower for Grant Burge wines.

As a large winery, grapes are purchased through a large network of growers across South Australia, with roughly 230 hectares of vines supplying fruit in addition to the crops available from the Burge family vineyards. The extensive portfolio ranges from everyday wines to critically acclaimed icons capable of extended cellaring.
