Grenache with a 3% splash of mataro for good measure, sourced from out Ebenezer way in the north. It's a pretty little thing with aromas of wild strawberry, plum, raspberry and dried cranberry with underlying hints of gingerbread, exotic spice, orange blossom, dried citrus rind and turned earth. Plenty of space and detail on the palate with fine, silty tannins, pure, spicy fruit and just the right amount of cut and drive. It's delicious, and tremendous value to boot.

Medium red with purple tints in the rim, the bouquet sweetly fragrant, raspberry confections, boiled lolly, bonbon, with a patina of dried herbs, while the palate is intense and backed by fine, emery-like tannins that dry the finish. Good length. An elegant, mid-weight, fruit-driven style with the potential to build more charm in time, and has the backbone to cope with quite hearty foods 21 Sep 2024 Drink 2024–2037

Head Wines Old Vine Grenache from the Barossa Valley is a beautifully crafted red wine that showcases the elegance and intensity of Grenache sourced from some of the region’s most treasured old vines. Produced by Head Wines, a boutique winery founded by Alex Head, this wine is a tribute to the Barossa’s rich viticultural heritage and the unique character of its ancient Grenache vineyards.
The Grenache grapes are hand-picked from old, dry-grown vines, some of which are over 70 years old. These venerable vines, planted in sandy and loamy soils, produce low yields of highly concentrated fruit with exceptional depth and complexity. The Barossa Valley’s warm days and cool nights further enhance the balance of ripe fruit and refreshing acidity in the wine.
Alex Head’s winemaking philosophy emphasizes minimal intervention and a focus on terroir. The grapes are fermented with wild yeasts, and a portion of whole bunches is included to enhance structure and aromatic complexity. The wine is aged in neutral French oak barrels, allowing the fruit to shine while adding subtle textural nuances. This careful approach results in a Grenache that is vibrant, elegant, and true to its origins.
In the glass, Head Wines Old Vine Grenache displays a radiant ruby-red color. The nose is expressive, offering aromas of ripe raspberries, red cherries, and wild strawberries, interwoven with hints of dried herbs, white pepper, and a touch of earthy spice. On the palate, it is medium-bodied with a silky texture, fine tannins, and balanced acidity. Flavors of juicy red fruits are complemented by subtle notes of licorice and mineral undertones, leading to a long, graceful finish.
This Grenache pairs beautifully with dishes like grilled lamb, roast pork, or Mediterranean-inspired vegetable dishes. It’s also an excellent match for charcuterie or aged cheeses, making it a versatile choice for various occasions. While approachable now, Head Wines Old Vine Grenache has the structure to age gracefully for 8-10 years, developing additional complexity over time.
