The fruit here comes from four old vineyards across the Barossa. The wine is designed for immediate gratification. The vineyards, across Bethany, Krondorf and two in the sub-region of Ebenezer, were planted between 1942 and 1970. A dollop of whole bunches was included and there is also 3% Mataro forming part of the blend. Alex suggests a brief chill for full enjoyment. 700 cases. A little comparable to what one imagines drinking a glass of silk would be like. We have notes of kirsch, raspberries, mulberries and cherries, with dried herbs and bright acidity. Persistent style, fresh and youthful, with appealing balance. A Grenache of finesse and a pleasure to drink now, but I would not hesitate to put some away for the rest of the decade, if one felt inclined.

Head Wines Red Grenache from the Barossa Valley is a lively, expressive take on one of the region’s most treasured old vine varieties. Made by Alex Head, a winemaker known for his elegant, Rhône-inspired reds, this Grenache is all about purity, vibrancy and site transparency.

Sourced from dry-grown vineyards in the higher elevations of the Eden Valley and the cooler corners of the Barossa, the fruit is handpicked and wild fermented with a light touch. Gentle extraction, minimal new oak and early bottling keep the focus on freshness, perfume and drinkability.

It bursts with aromas of wild strawberry, raspberry, rose petal and crushed herbs, with a dusting of white pepper and warm earth. The palate is medium-bodied and juicy, with silky tannins, red cherry fruit and a savoury twist that gives it food-friendly versatility.

This is a Grenache to chill slightly and enjoy with chargrilled lamb, lentil stew, or spiced roast cauliflower. Delicious young, though it will evolve nicely over the next 4 to 6 years.
