Deep dark colour with a rich ripe and plush nose of black plums and cherries, the palate full bodied and fleshy, seductively smooth and supple in texture, with good length and loads of appeal. Drinks well now but there is no hurry. 01 APR 2024 Drink 2024–2037

This is one heady mix of four Barossan grape varieties and two regions all rolled into one glorious, easy going, lightly savoury wine. Has Barossan friendliness written all over it. How about those gorgeous iridescent purple hues! I suspect the role of 2% Viognier co-fermented with 81 % Shiraz comes into play there. Their blending buddies are Grenache (11%) and Mataro (6%) with all grapes sourced from either the Barossa Valley or Eden Valley. The scent is similarly memorable, exhibiting an aromatic mix half way between English garden and Aussie bush with bramble, red and black cherry, grilled plum and spices aplenty. Oak is discreet. This is all about the fruit, layers of it, supported ably by lively spice, florals and a gentle savouriness.

This shiraz, grenache, mataro, viognier blend is a tribute to Henry Evans who planted the first vineyard of seven acres at Keyneton in 1853. He quickly developed a reputation for producing the best wines in the southern colony. Following Henry’s death in 1868, his widow Sarah exercised her temperance convictions by closing the winery and uprooting all the wine grapes. This blend highlights the historical introduction of southern French and Spanish varieties to South Australia in those early pioneering days and reflects the history, religion and culture of the Barossa.

Deep ruby with violet hues. Lifted raspberry, red currant, mulberry and Satsuma plum, with floral notes of violets, lavender, crushed flowering herbs and anise, pepper and mace spice. A rich and intense palate of well defined, concentrated red fruits; red currant, cut plum and spicy wild berries, give way to crunchy mid palate, firm-edged velvety tannins and excellent length.
