This is a cracking good chardonnay. A little winemaking involvement with battonage, wild yeast fermentation, time on lees and a mix of different format oaks has worked well with the intensity of the fruit. The nose is quite beautiful with aromas of nectarine and white peach with an edgier grapefruit nuanced in the background. The palate shows delightful texture but there is a minerally character that threads with purpose through to a very long finish. Nice spicy touch adds the final flourish.”

This is as tight as a drum – ping goes the sorbet-like acidity. It’s all lemon and grapefruit, moreish yet a little flinty, perky even, with refined cedary oak and lees all in the background, barely making a noise but humming along. Delicious for sure, quite energising but come back to this in another year and then we can really get the party started.

2023 Howard Park Chardonnay is a sensational wine with a perfect balance between sensual, refreshing Chardonnay grapes, which hail from the brilliant Karridale sub-district, and careful use of new and used French oak. Larger barrels are favoured here, so the oak notes caress the fruit instead of dominating, and this leaves the Chardonnay free to enchant the senses with its unrushed Comice pear, white peach and green apple skin freshness. The climate in this part of Margaret River yields lusty wines with exceptional freshness, and this Heritage-label creation is a classic case in point.

Evocative aromas of cinnamon quills, fruit bread, peach Danish and buttered popcorn form a welcoming bouquet, underlaid by lifted notes of white grapefruit, orange blossom and yellow nectarine. A luxurious texture unfurls across the palate, reminiscent of ripe stone fruit and dulce de leche, counterbalanced by bright citrus and vibrant acidity. The warm patisserie notes on the nose are mirrored on the palate in the form of baking spice, nutmeal and vanilla. The elongated finish speaks to the persistence of flavour and quality of fruit at the core of this wine, and hints at the richness and complexity that will continue develop with time in bottle.
