From flint rich parcels in the heart of Sancerre, J. de Villebois Sancerre Silex explores the sharper, more mineral driven side of Loire Sauvignon Blanc. Founded by Joost de Villebois, the house has built a reputation for crafting focused, modern expressions of classic Loire terroirs, highlighting soil influence and purity of fruit. Silex soils are prized for producing wines of tension, smoky nuance and long ageing potential, giving this cuvée a quietly cult appeal among Sauvignon Blanc devotees.
A pale straw colour with glistening green reflections introduces an aromatic profile of lime zest, grapefruit and green apple layered with elderflower, fresh herbs and a distinct flinty smokiness. There is a sense of precision and cool restraint that immediately sets the tone.
The palate is dry and chiselled, delivering citrus and orchard fruit flavours framed by vibrant acidity and a firm mineral spine. Subtle notes of passionfruit skin, saline freshness and gentle phenolic texture build through the mid palate, leading to a long, mouthwatering finish that feels both energetic and composed. While beautifully refreshing in its youth, this Sancerre will continue to gain savoury complexity and texture over six to ten years.
Grilled sardines with lemon and sea salt, anchovy and tomato galette shared on a sun warmed table, or bright herb salads piled high beside crusty bread and olive oil. A spin of Serge Gainsbourg Aux Armes et Caetera or something effortlessly cool from Air drifting through the background, the wine bringing Loire freshness with a knowing wink.
