A fine brisk ruby, lively red fruit, on the raspberry strawberry cusp. The fruit builds very nicely across the mid palate, just a little youthful bitterness, some crunchy fruit at the back, very elegant finish. Drink from 2027-2031. Tasted Dec 2024.

Jane Eyre’s Gevrey-Chambertin Village Rouge is a refined and quietly powerful Burgundy that beautifully expresses one of the Côte de Nuits’ most iconic appellations through the lens of one of Australia’s most respected micro-négociants. Originally from Melbourne, Jane Eyre has made a name for herself in Burgundy with a hands-off, intuitive winemaking style that champions elegance, site expression, and minimal intervention. Her wines are sought after by collectors and sommeliers alike, and her Gevrey-Chambertin is a shining example of why.

The fruit comes from carefully selected parcels in Gevrey, where old vines on limestone and marl soils produce concentrated, finely structured Pinot Noir. Fermentation is done with indigenous yeasts and partial whole bunches, depending on the vintage, and ageing takes place in mostly used French oak barrels, allowing the vineyard character to take the lead rather than the wood.

What you get is a wine of real charm and quiet depth. Aromas of wild strawberry, black cherry, and cranberry are layered with subtle earthiness, forest floor, and delicate spice. There’s a sense of restraint and precision, with fine-grained tannins and beautifully balanced acidity. It’s savoury, floral, and mineral all at once—the kind of Pinot that doesn’t shout but lingers in the memory.

It’s a dream match for duck breast, mushroom risotto, or roast quail, but it’s equally at home with a cheese board and good conversation. A Burgundy with soul, and one that proves village-level wines can be just as thought-provoking as their grander cousins.
