Kir-Yianni Paranga Red is a lively and approachable red blend from the mountainous vineyards of Amyndeon in northern Greece’s PGI Macedonia. This wine comes from the innovative Kir-Yianni estate, founded by Yiannis Boutaris, a leading figure in modern Greek winemaking who helped elevate native varieties onto the world stage. Today, the estate is run by Stellios Boutaris, continuing the family’s commitment to fresh, expressive wines with a sense of place.
Paranga Red is a blend of Xinomavro, Merlot and Syrah, bringing together the vibrant acidity and savoury edge of Xinomavro with the plush fruit of Merlot and the spice and structure of Syrah. The grapes are grown in high-altitude vineyards on sandy, well-drained soils, which help preserve freshness and aromatic lift. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel with minimal oak influence, keeping the style youthful, juicy and clean.
The nose offers bright red cherry, raspberry, and plum, along with hints of pepper, thyme and a touch of tomato leaf from the Xinomavro. The palate is medium-bodied and silky, showing red fruits and spice with a fresh acid line and fine tannins. There’s a lovely balance between fruit, earth and herb, making it both easygoing and interesting.
Pair it with grilled lamb chops, moussaka, eggplant parmigiana, or a meaty pizza. It also works well slightly chilled with charcuterie or roast vegetable dishes. Best enjoyed over the next few years while its fruit and vibrancy are at their peak.
