In the heart of the Côte de Nuits, Clos de Vougeot stands as one of Burgundy’s most historic and revered Grand Cru vineyards. The walled clos dates back to the twelfth century when Cistercian monks first cultivated the land, recognising the remarkable potential of its limestone and clay soils. Today the vineyard is divided among many small growers, each crafting their own interpretation of this legendary site. Laurent Roumier, from a respected Burgundian family of vignerons, works carefully with his parcels in Clos de Vougeot to produce a Pinot Noir that reflects both the depth of the terroir and the finesse that defines great Côte de Nuits wines.
The wine shows a deep ruby colour with bright garnet reflections. Aromas unfold gradually with red cherry, raspberry and wild strawberry layered with rose petal, subtle spice and hints of forest floor. As the wine opens further notes of earth, dried herbs and gentle oak emerge, adding complexity. The palate is structured yet refined with fine tannins supporting flavours of red berries, plum and savoury spice.
A thread of freshness runs through the wine, carrying the fruit across a long and elegant finish that reflects the stature of this Grand Cru vineyard. Built for the cellar, it will continue to evolve beautifully over fifteen to twenty years. It is well suited to roast duck, game birds, slow cooked meats or classic French bistro dishes.
