Paul Jaboulet Crozes Hermitage Les Jalets is a beautifully pure and classic expression of Northern Rhône Syrah, showcasing the balance of spice, dark fruit, and freshness that makes this appellation so beloved. Maison Paul Jaboulet Aîné, founded in 1834, is one of the Rhône Valley’s most historic producers. Since 2006, the estate has been under the stewardship of Caroline Frey, who has elevated the quality through meticulous organic and biodynamic vineyard work and a focus on precision in the cellar. Les Jalets comes from vineyards located on the gentle slopes and terraces of Crozes Hermitage, just south of the legendary Hermitage hill itself.
The vineyards are planted on a mix of alluvial soils with pebbles, sand, and limestone, which provide excellent drainage and help moderate vine vigour. The region’s continental climate, with warm sunny days and cool nights, allows Syrah to ripen slowly, building complex aromas and fine tannins while retaining vibrant acidity. The fruit is harvested at optimal maturity, destemmed, and fermented in temperature-controlled tanks. Aging occurs in a mix of stainless steel and older French oak barrels, preserving freshness and letting the varietal character shine.
In the glass, Les Jalets is a deep ruby-purple. Aromas of blackberries, black cherries, cracked pepper, violets, and a touch of smoked meat leap from the glass. The palate is medium bodied, elegant, and lively, with juicy dark fruit, spice, and a savoury mineral edge framed by fine-grained tannins. It’s a Syrah that speaks clearly of its northern Rhône origins, balancing generosity with poise.
This wine is an excellent match for roast lamb with herbs, grilled duck breast, charcuterie, or mushroom and lentil dishes. Its peppery freshness also makes it perfect alongside hard cheeses or game birds. While delicious young, it has the structure to develop further complexity over 8 to 10 years in the cellar.
