2023 Penfolds Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley

Of Penfolds' American wines, this has been the one that consistently impresses me. Single-vineyard cabernet sauvignon matured in new American oak barriques for 16 months. It's a gorgeous wine, complex and layered, with a precision and sense of restraint that I don't normally associate with wines from Napa. Deep blackberry, blueberry and black cherry fruits flecked with raspberry and intertwined with hints of baking spices, black pepper, crushed herbs and stone, cocoa nibs, fig paste, roasting meats, cedar and tobacco. The palate is pure and polished with just the right measure of gloss to the fruit, fine-grained tannins and a sleek, graceful arc of travel as the wine slowly trails off.

The 2023 vintage draws exclusively from carefully selected vineyards within Oakville, where warm days and cool evenings encouraged slow, even ripening and outstanding flavour concentration. Each parcel was vinified separately before careful maturation in French oak, preserving the purity of the fruit while adding subtle layers of spice and texture. The result is a Cabernet Sauvignon that marries Napa Valley generosity with the precision, balance and longevity that have become synonymous with Penfolds.

Deep garnet with an almost opaque crimson core, the bouquet is immediately captivating, revealing aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry and dark plum layered with violet, cedar and finely shaved pencil lead. As the wine opens, notes of cocoa nib, sage, espresso and crushed river stone emerge, bringing further depth and sophistication. The palate is concentrated yet impeccably composed, with a powerful core of cassis and black cherry wrapped in beautifully polished tannins. Hints of dark chocolate, tobacco leaf, graphite and savoury spice unfold across an exceptionally long finish, where freshness and mineral precision balance the wine's richness with remarkable ease.

An outstanding match for dry aged rib eye, herb crusted lamb, beef Wellington, grilled portobello mushrooms or aged Gouda. Although wonderfully expressive after time in a decanter, this distinguished Cabernet Sauvignon has the pedigree and structure to evolve gracefully for twenty to thirty years, rewarding patience with even greater complexity and refinement.
