Pio Cesare L’Altro Chardonnay from the Langhe is a bright, expressive and wonderfully versatile white that showcases a lighter, more contemporary side of this historic Piedmont estate. The name L’Altro means the other, a playful nod to this being Pio Cesare’s second Chardonnay style after their more opulent barrel matured cuvée. Fruit comes from vineyards in the hills around Alba, where limestone and marl soils preserve freshness and bring subtle mineral drive. Cool nights help the grapes ripen slowly, building flavour while retaining crisp acidity. Fermentation in stainless steel and only a small portion in older French oak keeps the wine energetic, vibrant and easy to love from the moment it is released.
Fragrant aromas of lemon zest, green apple and white peach lead the way, supported by pear, grapefruit and soft floral notes. Beneath the fruit sits a gentle savoury line of almond skin, crushed stone and fennel seed that reflects the Langhe’s unique soils. As the wine opens, hints of acacia blossom, chamomile and a touch of honeyed citrus bring extra charm without richness.
The palate is sleek, lively and beautifully balanced. Citrus and orchard fruit glide across a lightly creamy texture shaped by brief lees contact. Flavours of lemon curd, pear skin, peach and subtle spice unfold with refreshing clarity, guided by bright acidity that keeps things clean and refreshing. The finish is crisp, dry and persistent with lingering citrus oil, florals and a subtle mineral echo. It drinks beautifully young but can develop a touch more complexity over the next few years.
Brilliant with antipasti, grilled prawns, creamy pasta with herbs, roast chicken, risotto primavera, sushi, white pizza, fresh goat cheese or served as an elegant aperitivo.
