2023 Pyramid Valley Pinot Noir, North Canterbury

An interesting wine. The nose is a little angular and unresolved to start but with a little time in the glass opens up. Quite a bit of tannin, fruit sits in the background. Structured and firm. Quite a definite, chewy style of wine. Though there is a nice core of fruit sweetness and good length so I suspect, it just needs time.

Wild fermentation, gentle extraction and careful maturation in French oak preserve the vineyard's character, resulting in a Pinot Noir of finesse, texture and impressive longevity.

The colour is a brilliant ruby with crimson highlights. Aromas of wild cherry, raspberry and dark plum are layered with rose petal, thyme, five spice and subtle forest floor notes. The palate is silky and beautifully detailed, with vibrant red and dark berry fruit framed by fine tannins and refreshing acidity. Hints of tea leaf, earthy minerality and delicate oak build through a long, graceful finish that lingers with purity and precision.

A wonderful partner for roast duck, grilled quail, mushroom and truffle risotto, herb roasted pork loin or roasted beetroot with whipped goat's cheese. Drinking beautifully now, this elegant Pinot Noir will continue to evolve gracefully over the next ten to twelve years.
