Very deep red with a good tint of purple and a briary, walnut oil and cedar bouquet, tinged with subtle and attractive oak. The wine is full bodied, with concentrated cassis fruit, and there's a backing of appropriately firm tannins that roll across the full length of the palate. Intense and stylish cabernet, approachable young but cellaring is recommended for best results. This is amazing value. Drink to 2040.

As always with these guys, this wine is ridiculously good value. Coming from a wonderful vintage in Margaret River, the wine spent sixteen months maturing in French oak, 35% of which was new. I really can’t think of a single reason why any lover of cracking Cabernet doesn’t have several cases of this in their cellar. Deep maroon hue, this is intense and even slightly austere at this early stage, with good concentration. There is power here but also balance and length. The nose gives us notes of black fruits, cassis, smoked meats, dry herbs, graphite and bacon fat. There is good oak integration. A supple texture with serious length, this should drink beautifully for the next fifteen years. Drink to 2040.

Rosily Vineyard is a 12-hectare site located in the northern Wilyabrup sub-region of the Margaret River and named after a French cartographer involved in the French explorations of Western Australia in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
The first vines were planted in 1995 using cuttings from the Moss Wood vineyard, and the site has been certified organic since 2019. The soil types vary across the sloping property from deep gravelly loams to lighter sandy soils over a clay base, with twelve varieties matched to the soil and the style of wine sought. Vineyard manager Sam Castleden knows each one intimately, as he planted the first ones.
Sam’s annual work is brought to the bottle by long term winemaker Mike Lemmes, who after a few years of brewing ciders returned to Rosily in time for the 2023 vintage. All wines are made from estate grown fruit.
2023 started with a cool spring in Margaret River followed by a slow, steady and dry growing season that produced excellent overall quality. The low-yielding, nearly 30 year-old Cabernet Sauvignon vines in the gravelly top block of the vineyard did exceptionally well.
Bold aromas of black fruit, charcuterie, graphite and cedar. Powerful and long palate with concentrated earthy blackcurrant flavours and notes of cedar. Firm, even tannins.
This is an intense wine that needs plenty of air if approaching it young, and a touch of saltiness on the plate: smoked portobello mushrooms with blue cheese butter, eggplant Parmigiana or slow-braised duck legs with prunes and black olives.
Great value, and further cellaring will show the wine at its best. Might be the wine to buy by the case.
