Shaky Bridge Pioneer Pinot Noir from Central Otago is a bold yet finely structured wine that reflects the rugged beauty and extreme conditions of New Zealand’s most southerly wine region. Grown in the Alexandra subregion, one of the coolest and driest parts of Central Otago, this Pinot offers deep flavour, vibrant acidity and silky tannins with a distinct sense of place.
The Pioneer label celebrates the early settlers of the region, and the wine itself pays tribute to traditional Pinot Noir craftsmanship. Hand-harvested fruit from low-yielding vines is fermented in small batches with partial whole bunch inclusion, enhancing perfume and complexity. It is then matured in a mix of French oak barrels, around 20 to 30 percent new, adding subtle structure without overwhelming the purity of the fruit.
Aromas of wild cherry, red plum and raspberry rise from the glass, along with hints of clove, thyme, rose petal and forest floor. The palate is juicy and focused, with red berry flavours layered over fine tannins and a savoury, earthy backbone. It’s elegant and expressive, with the depth and balance to reward short-term cellaring.
Pair it with duck breast and cherry sauce, mushroom risotto, grilled salmon or herbed lamb cutlets. Soft cheeses like Brie or a truffled pecorino also match beautifully. Enjoy now for its freshness or cellar up to 6 to 8 years for added complexity.
