Spinifex approaches Syrah from a very different angle to the classic Barossa stereotype, leaning into detail, spice and structure rather than sheer weight. Pete Schell works with carefully selected parcels across the Barossa and Eden Valleys, often from cooler sites and older vines, aiming to capture a more savoury, northern Rhône inspired expression while still reflecting the region’s warmth.
The 2023 vintage shows a lifted, aromatic profile. Dark cherry and blackberry sit alongside a vibrant thread of violet, with cracked pepper, clove and a touch of star anise adding spice. There is a savoury undercurrent too, olive tapenade, a hint of smoked meat and a gentle earthiness that gives the wine real complexity.
On the palate it is medium bodied and finely structured, with silky tannins and a line of fresh acidity that keeps everything in balance. The fruit is precise rather than broad, moving into a savoury, lightly mineral finish that lingers with spice and a touch of graphite. It feels composed and detailed, more about finesse than power.
Winemaking is handled with a light touch, often incorporating whole bunch and older oak to build texture and aromatic complexity without masking the fruit. The result is a Syrah that feels transparent and expressive, showing both vineyard and vintage.
This is a natural partner for dishes with a bit of savoury depth. Lamb cutlets with rosemary, duck breast, or grilled beef all work beautifully, and it also pairs well with earthy flavours like mushrooms or lentils.
Enjoy it now with a bit of air, or cellar for eight to twelve years as it develops more savoury complexity, with notes of spice, leather and forest floor emerging over time.
