The phenolic tension and focus spreads on and on across the integrated palate. Medium- to full-bodied, this is flavorful with sliced apples and light pie-crust. Fermented and aged in a 10-hectoliter cask. Great finish. Drink or hold.

The Tenuta Delle Terre Nere Vigne Niche Calderara Sottana Bianco is an exceptional white wine from the Calderara Sottana vineyard on the northern slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily. Crafted from indigenous Carricante grapes, this wine is a pure expression of the volcanic terroir and high-altitude viticulture that define the region.

On the nose, the Vigne Niche Calderara Sottana Bianco reveals an elegant bouquet of citrus blossoms, green apple, and Meyer lemon, layered with hints of white peach, almond, and fresh herbs. Subtle smoky notes of volcanic ash and a touch of wet stone minerality lend a unique complexity to the aroma profile.

The palate is vibrant and focused, showcasing crisp acidity and a beautifully textured mouthfeel. Flavors of ripe citrus and green orchard fruits are complemented by saline nuances and a distinctive mineral backbone. A whisper of honeyed richness adds depth, while the long, precise finish reflects the wine’s finesse and purity.

Produced under the meticulous care of winemaker Marco de Grazia, this wine is a testament to the potential of Sicily’s white varietals. The Calderara Sottana vineyard, with its ancient vines and volcanic soils, provides an extraordinary environment for cultivating Carricante, resulting in a wine of remarkable complexity and longevity.

An excellent match for seafood dishes such as grilled swordfish, seared scallops, or linguine with clams, this wine also pairs well with creamy risottos and aged goat cheese. While approachable in its youth, the Vigne Niche Calderara Sottana Bianco has the structure and minerality to age gracefully for 8–12 years, developing additional layers of complexity over time.
