This is all about fresh, unfettered flavour, though instead of just tutti-fruity berries – which we do indeed get – we also get twiggy herb, undergrowth, tobacco and woodsmoke notes. In terms of complexity we still get breadth. In terms of drinkability it’s still set to high. This is an absolute yes from me."

Thousand Candles is led by Stuart Proud and Tim Holmes, two highly respected Yarra Valley winemakers known for their thoughtful, minimal intervention approach and deep respect for site. Their philosophy is about letting vineyards speak clearly, working gently in the cellar, and making wines that feel alive rather than overworked. The Gathering Field range reflects that mindset, and the Nouveau Pinot is inspired by the European tradition of bottling early to capture the energy of the vintage.

The wine is all about crunch and charm. Sour cherry, wild strawberry and raspberry burst from the glass, with floral lift and a subtle earthy undertone that keeps it grounded. The palate is light, juicy and energetic, with very soft tannins and bright acidity giving a clean, refreshing finish. Slightly chilled, it becomes dangerously easy to drink.

This is a wine made for casual food and good company. Think charcuterie, roast chicken, pizza, burgers, grilled mushrooms or a long lunch that turns into dinner. Drink it young while it is bursting with life and freshness.
