Old vine mataro (the majority from an 150-year-old block) from Kalimna in the north of the Barossa. '23 presents a slightly cooler year and there is a denser spice presence felt in this wine. Meaty dark and black berry fruits on a bed of garrigue, turned earth, pressed purple flowers, dried citrus peel, pastis, dried meats and spice. Quite elemental and concentrated with fine, compact tannins and a sense of latent power as it trails off.

A standout expression of Barossa Valley’s rich winemaking heritage, crafted with passion and expertise by Tim Smith, one of the region’s most respected winemakers. Known for his dedication to classic Barossa varietals, Smith showcases the depth and complexity of Mataro (Mourvèdre) in this beautifully structured wine.
Deep garnet in color, the wine opens with aromas of dark plums, blackberries, and earthy spices, complemented by subtle notes of leather and dried herbs. The palate is bold yet refined, featuring layers of ripe dark fruits, fine-grained tannins, and a touch of savory minerality, leading to a long, satisfying finish. Perfect for pairing with slow-cooked meats, game dishes, or aged cheeses.
