The Factor is Torbreck’s homage to old vine Barossa power, built from parcels that deliver depth, structure and age worthiness. Torbreck was founded in the 1990s by David Powell with a vision inspired by the great wines of the Rhône, focusing on ancient, dry grown vineyards across the Barossa Valley. Today the estate is led by Chief Winemaker Ian Hongell, who continues the philosophy of respectful vineyard sourcing, traditional methods and patient élevage. The Factor draws predominantly from mature Shiraz vines rooted in some of the Valley’s most revered soils.
Low yielding fruit is hand harvested and fermented to extract depth and fine tannin without losing balance. Maturation in French oak adds structure and polish while allowing the vineyard character to remain central. The aim is a wine of scale and gravitas, but with refinement and longevity rather than brute force.
Deep, inky crimson in colour, the aromas open with blackberry, plum and black cherry layered with dark chocolate, liquorice and subtle spice. The palate is full bodied and concentrated, with rich dark fruit wrapped in firm, velvety tannins and balanced acidity. Savoury notes and well integrated oak carry into a long, powerful finish that lingers with intensity.
It pairs beautifully with slow braised beef, lamb shoulder and richly flavoured dishes. While compelling in its youth with air, it will cellar confidently for twenty years or more, developing complex earthy and savoury nuance.
