2023 Woodlands Wilyabrup Chardonnay, Margaret River

Woodlands is one of Margaret River's pioneering family estates, established in 1973 when David and Heather Watson planted some of the earliest vines in the now famous Wilyabrup subregion. Their vision helped shape the future of Margaret River wine, and today the second generation, led by Stuart Watson and winemaker Andrew Watson, continues that legacy. The estate has earned a reputation for producing wines that combine precision, balance and a strong sense of place, with Chardonnay emerging as one of its standout varieties.

Wilyabrup is widely regarded as the heart of Margaret River, producing some of Australia's finest Chardonnay thanks to its gravelly loam soils, maritime influence and long, even growing season. The 2023 vintage delivered fruit of exceptional quality, with excellent flavour concentration balanced by vibrant natural acidity. Careful oak maturation and extended lees contact add texture and complexity while preserving freshness and purity.

Pale gold with bright green highlights, the bouquet reveals aromas of white peach, nectarine and grapefruit layered with notes of lemon curd, roasted hazelnut and subtle flinty complexity. The palate is beautifully poised, combining citrus and stone fruit flavours with a creamy texture and fine mineral thread. Bright acidity drives the wine across the palate, while carefully judged oak adds depth and structure without overwhelming the fruit. The finish is long, refined and persistent, lingering with citrus, spice and savoury nuances.

This is a superb partner for grilled lobster, seared scallops, roast chicken with tarragon, creamy seafood pasta or a pumpkin and sage risotto. While already highly appealing, the balance and structure will allow it to evolve gracefully over the next eight to ten years.
