Saint Péray has been quietly gaining momentum, and in the hands of Yves Cuilleron it becomes a seriously compelling white Rhône. From granite slopes just outside Valence, Marsanne and Roussanne take on a fresher, more lifted expression here. Cuilleron’s approach is all about balance, capturing texture without losing that sense of energy.
The 2023 vintage is bright and detailed. Aromatics open with ripe pear, white peach and quince, backed by citrus zest and a gentle floral lift. There is a subtle savoury layer underneath, almond, fennel and a faint stony edge that gives the wine its shape.
On the palate it is medium bodied with a smooth, rounded texture, but there is a clear line of freshness running through it. Orchard fruit gives way to more savoury notes, nuts, spice and a lightly waxy feel, finishing clean with a lingering mineral touch.
Winemaking is handled with care, using a mix of stainless steel and oak to build texture while keeping the fruit and site in focus.
This is where it gets interesting at the table. It works beautifully with scallops in brown butter and capers, a saffron and fennel seafood stew, or grilled squid with preserved lemon. For vegetarian options, think pumpkin and sage risotto, white beans with rosemary and olive oil, or roasted cauliflower with tahini and toasted seeds, the wine’s texture and gentle savoury edge make it a natural match.
Drinking well now, it will continue to evolve over the next five to eight years, gaining more nutty, honeyed complexity while holding its balance.
