L'Extravagant de Doisy Daene from Barsac is one of the rarest and most opulent sweet wines in the world, crafted only in exceptional vintages and in minute quantities. Made by the Dubourdieu family, with Jean Jacques Dubourdieu now continuing the legacy of his late father Denis Dubourdieu, this wine is the ultimate expression of botrytised Sauvignon Blanc blended with a touch of Sémillon when the vintage allows.
The Doisy Daene estate, located in the Barsac appellation within Sauternes, is famed for producing wines of incredible finesse and freshness. L'Extravagant was first created in 1990 almost by accident when Denis Dubourdieu decided to vinify a tiny parcel of Sauvignon Blanc grapes that had developed extreme levels of botrytis. The result was a wine so rich, concentrated, and pure that it stood apart from anything else being produced in Bordeaux at the time.
The grapes for L'Extravagant are harvested berry by berry at extraordinary ripeness levels, often achieving natural sugar concentrations of over 250 grams per litre. Fermentation is slow and meticulous, carried out in new French oak barrels where the wine is then aged with great care. The result is a wine of extraordinary richness balanced by electrifying acidity and precision.
In the glass, L'Extravagant de Doisy Daene offers a kaleidoscope of aromas including apricot jam, passionfruit, honeycomb, candied citrus, saffron, and exotic spices. The palate is unctuously textured yet lifted by a spine of vibrant acidity that prevents it from ever feeling heavy. The finish is endless, pure, and layered with mineral energy and sweet spice. It is both hedonistic and refined, a wine that defies easy description and stands at the absolute pinnacle of sweet wine production.
Perfect with blue cheese, foie gras, or simply enjoyed as a wine of meditation, L'Extravagant de Doisy Daene is a rare treasure that belongs in any serious cellar and continues to astonish all who are lucky enough to experience it.
