A pure, fine-boned and extremely elegant expression of cabernet. An almost refreshing feel, squeaky in texture, shimmering with fine, high-quality tannin, detailed with salt bush, bay lead and salted licorice amongst dark plum, cassis, cola and green olive fruit characters. The perfume is evocative, the flavours in harmony and stretched luxuriously to a fine, trailing herb 'n' peppery spice mix finish. An exceptional release that speaks fluently of vineyard and place, while providing immense satisfaction in the high-quality stakes division. Drink 2025 to 2038.

96 points Mike Bennie for Halliday Wine Companion Special Value, March 2026

The 2024 Cabernet Sauvignon leads with cassis and bramble, lavender, raspberry seed, dark chocolate, blood plum and a hint of nori. The palate is shaped by chalky tannins that move with the shape of the fruit in the mouth. This is all about dried herbs—sage and bay in particular—blue fruits and licorice, star anise and that top-order register of rising spices that move into "mint" without being "minty." This is a distinctive wine that I love each vintage, and given the quality (attention to detail) of the viticulture, the wine looks good/distinct/sophisticated in every season. Drink 2026 to 2039.

96 points Erin Larking for The Wine Advocate, April 2026

The 2024 Cabernet Sauvignon Calgardup Vineyard immediately impresses with bold blackcurrant and black olive aromas that are forceful and display a strong, muscular shape. Powerful flavors of licorice, gravel and graphite are well matched to deep-set tannins as the wine ripples with youthful intensity. A fabulous structural finish of immense length is the icing on the cake. Drink 2024 to 2045.

96 points Angus Hughson for Vinous, January 2026

Rob Mann is a sixth-generation West Australian winemaker whose grandfather Jack Mann is one of the most decorated figures in Australian wine history. His wife Genevieve worked in South Africa, France, California and South Australia before arriving at Howard Park as winemaker in 2007. Together they spent 15 years searching for the right piece of land for their Cabernet Sauvignon before taking custodianship of the Calgardup Vineyard in the southern Margaret River.

The dry grown and organically managed vineyard sits just two kilometres inland from Redgate Beach, surrounded by native bush and the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park. The soils are gravelly loam from weathered down granite. The winemaking philosophy strips back to the essentials relying largely on good fruit and rigorous berry selection. No new oak, rather fermented and aged in large format old vats that allow the fruit and natural tannins to express themselves without interference.

Deep crimson, the nose is immediately arresting with violets, dark plum, cassis, and mulberry plus salt bush, bay leaf, liquorice and a graphite mineral thread. The palate is fine-boned and precise with chalky, almost velvety tannins, lively acidity and a long, trailing finish of herbs and peppery spice.

A wine of genuine distinction from a vineyard that has found its true voice through Rob and Gen. Worth decanting for an hour in enjoying young, but if you can, do allow the wine further bottle development if you can, you’ll be richly rewarded.

The wine can be enjoyed with a classic Cabernet partner like roast beef, but with maturity would also sit well at a festive Cantonese banquet.
