2024 Cullen Mangan Red Moon Biodynamic, Margaret River

A blend of 33/23/22/17/5% malbec/grenache/mourvèdre/petit verdot/merlot. Fruit still comes off the Mangan vineyard, augmented by 33% off the Cullen property. While the vintage was a hot, dry one, this is so fragrant, lively and buoyant – belying the season. Dark fruit – all plums and blackberries with red berries liberally coated with warm, woodsy spices (not oak per se, as this is aged 8 months in older barrels). Fuller bodied with fine, silty tannins and juicy acidity. Terrific red now but will garner more complexity in time.

This is a blend of malbec, grenache, mourvèdre, petit verdot and merlot. The ferment took place naturally with no additions before 8 months in older oak. So the oak influence is minimal, but it still plays a role in developing the textural feel and concentration of the palate. The colour and the fruit are quite brilliant, with a palate showing plenty of chalky tannins for support. It’s a mighty good wine for this price when you’re looking for a value-for-money drink.

Very deep and youthful purple-red colour; intense and fresh blackberry, cassis, cranberry aromas, tinged with crushed leaf and star anise. Likewise intense and bold, fresh and fruit-driven flavours of many berry fruits, sweetly ripe and charming, with silky-smooth tannins gently coating the tongue. It's malbec-driven but has none of the tomato stalk character of lesser malbecs. A brilliant, fruit-driven young red wine. The Red Moon blend changes slightly depending on the vintage but typically features a mix of Malbec, Petit Verdot, and Merlot, bringing together plush fruit, aromatic lift, and fine tannins in a seamless package.

Fruit is handpicked according to the biodynamic calendar and fermented with indigenous yeasts. Gentle extraction techniques are used to preserve brightness and avoid over-extraction, and maturation takes place in seasoned French oak barrels to build texture while keeping the wine fresh and fruit driven.
