Dr. H. Thanisch Bernkasteler Badstube Spätlese offers peach, citrus and slate driven Mosel elegance with superb ageing potential.
A classic Mosel Spatlese that reminds me of wines from the best vintages of the 1980s and 1990s. Very juicy and extremely refreshing, with abundant white peach and Asian pear flavors on the barely medium-bodied palate. Mouthwatering freshness in the long finish. Drink or hold.
94 points James Suckling
Few names are more deeply woven into the history of the Mosel than Dr. H. Thanisch. The estate's roots stretch back to the seventeenth century, and for generations the Thanisch family has been recognised as one of Bernkastel's most respected custodians of Riesling. Today, the winery continues to produce wines that capture the elegance, precision and age worthy character that have made the Mosel one of the world's great white wine regions.
Bernkasteler Badstube is one of the Mosel's historic vineyard sites, occupying steep slate slopes that overlook the Mosel River. These vineyards benefit from excellent sun exposure and the heat retaining properties of blue Devonian slate, helping Riesling achieve remarkable ripeness while preserving vibrant acidity. The 2024 Spätlese reflects the vineyard's ability to produce wines that balance luscious fruit with freshness and minerality.
Pale gold with green highlights, the bouquet is intensely aromatic, revealing aromas of white peach, apricot and ripe nectarine alongside notes of lime blossom, jasmine and slate. The palate is beautifully poised, combining succulent stone fruit flavours with mandarin, green apple and citrus zest. A gentle sweetness is perfectly balanced by lively acidity, creating a wine that feels both rich and weightless. Layers of mineral complexity emerge through the long finish, leaving impressions of citrus, honey and wet stone.
This is a magnificent partner for fresh king prawns, spicy Thai seafood dishes, pork belly with apple, roast duck with orange glaze or a blue cheese tart. Equally delightful on its own, it offers the irresistible balance of sweetness and acidity that has made Mosel Spätlese one of the world's most captivating wine styles.
