The 2024 Langhe Nebbiolo Gavarini pours a brilliant ruby red color and clearly stands a step above in this category, especially in a vintage like 2024, which generally leans toward some dilution. Sourced from declassified Barolo fruit, it offers beautiful aromatics of pressed cranberries, fresh roses, orange peel, and dusty earth. Medium-bodied, it offers elegance and balance, with fine tannins, bright freshness, and a mouthwatering texture that carries through the finish. It’s approachable already yet structured enough to evolve nicely over the coming decade. Drink 2026-2036.

From the Gavarini parcel in Monforte d’Alba, this Langhe Nebbiolo is Elio Grasso’s earlier drinking window into one of Barolo’s great sites. The same hands, the same organic farming, the same focus on Nebbiolo, just handled for immediacy rather than long ageing, which makes it incredibly appealing while still carrying real pedigree.

The aromatics jump straight out of the glass. Red cherry, raspberry and wild strawberry lead, with that classic Nebbiolo lift of rose petal and a hint of orange peel. There’s already a savoury edge building, dried herbs, a touch of spice and a faint earthy note that keeps it grounded.

On the palate it sits in the medium bodied range with fine, gently grippy tannins that remind you where it comes from. The fruit is bright and energetic, supported by a line of acidity that keeps everything fresh and moving. It finishes with that familiar Nebbiolo signature, red fruit, spice and a lightly savoury, mineral edge.

Winemaking follows the same disciplined approach as the Barolo, traditional in feel, allowing the vineyard character to come through clearly, just with a shorter élevage to keep things more open and approachable.

This is where it gets really fun. Think tajarin pasta with butter and sage, veal cotoletta, or something like duck ragù with plenty of herbs. It also works beautifully with dishes like mushroom and thyme pasta, roasted pumpkin with spice, or even a simple charred eggplant dish, the wine’s freshness and tannin giving plenty to play with.

Drinking beautifully now with a bit of air, it will hold over the next five to eight years, offering a lively, expressive take on Nebbiolo from a serious site.
