East Coast sauvignon blanc, pale with a green facet and inviting aromas of grapefruit, melon, citrus and gooseberry fruits, plus hints of sea spray, white flowers, crushed stone, flint, shelled peas, passionfruit and a light herbal nuance. Crisp and focused with a wicked mineral cadence, plenty of vibrant fruit and a stony, crisp, herb-flecked exit. Super! Drink to 2028.

92 points (Special Value) Dave Brookes for Halliday Wine Companion, May 2025

Almost water-white, a hint of lime in the light. Passionfruit, lime and green papaya on the nose. Has a lovely freshness well balanced by some textural elements as well. Tropical fruits, a touch of gooseberry, along it with a supple acidity that carries it longer than you initially expect to a clean crisp finish. Drink to 2029.

The Wineglass Bay wines are made by Freycinet Vineyard, the first commercial vineyard and winery on the East Coast of Tasmania. Former Sydneysiders Geoff and Susan Bull planted their first vines in 1979 near Bicheno, with the first wines produced in 1983. Their daughter Lindy is today continuing the work with her partner Claudio Radenti, with the third generation already learning the ropes. The family currently cultivates four vineyards, all within kilometres of the original site. All wines are made on-site from estate grown fruit.

This wine is sourced from estate-grown and hand-tended 40-year-old vines. The 2024 season was warm and dry, and a welcome return to more regular conditions after a couple of La Niña seasons. The fruit was hand-harvested and 40% fermented in French oak barriques, a small percentage of which were new. The balance was fermented cool in stainless steel.

The wine greets with aromas of citrus and gooseberries, with suggestions from a warm climate kitchen garden by the sea: white flowers, peas, soft herbs, broken lime leaves, green papaya and a light saline flintiness. Dry and textural, with fruit and herb flavours that linger and mirror the nose.

A wine for a catch-up with friends, and great with South East Asian salads: Thai green papaya with grilled prawns or Vietnamese herbs with poached chicken.
