The Pinot vines at Merricks are 28 years old and sit on grey loams and red ferrosols, but with a north-facing aspect. Yields were slightly higher than in 2023, and the fruit’s integrity meant it retained balance with Barney’s preferred inclusion of 33% bunches. The winemaking is, as always, pretty hands-off: natural fermentation as bunches and whole berries, with gentle extraction and 10 months in 20% new oak.
Barney’s touch with whole bunches is notable and, as usual, it’s seamlessly integrated, providing savoury balance to the trademark power and intensity of the Merricks fruit. It’s very deep and layered, full of berries, spice, flowers and licks of minerality. This is serious (and seriously brilliant) Pinot, combining grippy structure with fresh lift, gliding weight and lingering length. This will get even better with air and—why not?—roast duck.
Garagiste Merricks Pinot Noir from the Mornington Peninsula is a beautifully detailed and site-driven expression of cool-climate Pinot, capturing the nuance and subtlety that the region’s southern reaches are known for. Sourced from low-yielding vineyards in Merricks, this wine reflects the maritime influence of the Bass Strait and the clay-loam soils that lend both lift and structure.
Winemaker Barnaby Flanders is known for his minimal-intervention style and precise handling of Pinot Noir. Fruit is handpicked and fermented with a portion of whole bunches to enhance fragrance and texture. Maturation takes place in French oak, mostly older barrels, to keep the focus on the purity of the fruit and the character of the site.
The result is a perfumed, medium-bodied Pinot with aromas of wild strawberry, sour cherry, dried rose, bramble and subtle forest floor. The palate is silky and fresh, with red berry fruit, fine-grained tannins and a savoury finish edged with spice and earth. It’s expressive yet poised, with quiet complexity and drive.
Pair it with duck breast, roast quail, mushroom risotto or grilled salmon. Best enjoyed over the next five to eight years as it gains further depth.
