Planted on a cool, south-facing slope in Tarrawarra. Barrel fermented and matured in puncheons and barriques (27% new). A bright green gold. Seductive with its bouquet of fuzzy peach skins, apricot, lemon oil and a hint of fresh vanilla bean. Opulent and creamily textured, with a fine vein of acidity running through the wine that gives it both structure and length. Very long and very yum to drink now and in the short to medium term.

Bright, light yellow-green colour; intense nose with a little smoky charcuterie reduction adding complexity to the citrus and stone-fruit flavours which are focused, intense, and beautifully concentrated, the refreshing acidity carrying it very long. A lip-smacking, appetising young chardonnay that will thrive for many years. 11 Dec 2025 Drink 2025–2035

Giant Steps Tarraford Chardonnay from the Yarra Valley is a quietly authoritative single vineyard wine that captures the cool, elevated heart of the Upper Yarra with remarkable precision and restraint. The Tarraford Vineyard sits at altitude on ancient volcanic soils, exposed to cold nights and long ripening conditions that naturally build intensity while preserving acidity and mineral tension. Giant Steps have worked with this site for years, treating it with a light but confident hand: hand harvesting, whole bunch pressing, wild fermentation in French oak and extended lees ageing, all carefully calibrated to let site character lead rather than winemaking artefact.

The aromatics are refined and layered rather than overtly flashy. White peach, nectarine and lemon curd sit alongside green apple, citrus blossom and pear skin. A subtle struck flint and wet stone note weaves through the fruit, supported by almond meal, cashew and faint brioche from lees contact. As the wine opens, hints of chamomile, ginger spice and citrus oil add extra dimension.

The palate is powerful yet beautifully composed. Stone fruit and citrus flow through a creamy but tightly wound mid palate, framed by bright, chalky acidity that gives the wine length and energy. Flavours of peach skin, grapefruit pith, nougat and fine spice build steadily before resolving into a long, mineral driven finish with a saline edge that feels distinctly Tarraford. The balance between texture and freshness is superb. It is compelling now but clearly built for the long term, with eight to twelve years revealing deeper savoury notes, toasted nuts and layered complexity.

An excellent match for roast chicken, butter poached lobster, scallops, grilled fish, mushroom dishes or aged soft cheeses. Tarraford Chardonnay stands confidently among Australia’s finest site driven whites, offering depth, precision and unmistakable Yarra Valley character.
