Gibson Wines was founded in 1996 by Rob Gibson, a viticulturist and geologist who spent over two decades at Penfolds before striking out on his own in the northern Barossa. Known locally as "The Dirtman" for his deep fascination with soils and vineyards, Rob built the winery around small-batch production and a hands-on understanding of what individual sites can deliver. The Duke Grenache is the project of his son Adam — the second generation at Gibson — whose football nickname has stuck well beyond the playing days that earned it.

Sourced from Barossa fruit and made in the same unfussy, site-focused style that defines the Gibson range, this is a Grenache built for the table rather than the trophy cabinet. Medium-bodied and fragrant, it opens with lifted red cherry, spiced plum and dried flowers, leading to a palate of cranberry, red apple skin and savoury earthiness, with fine grainy tannins and a clean, structured finish.

Versatile and approachable, this suits a wide range of food — try it with charcuterie, grilled lamb skewers, roast chicken with herbs, or vegetarian dishes such as ratatouille or a mushroom pizza.

Serve with a slight chill on a warm day.
