Harewood Denmark Pinot Noir from Western Australia’s Great Southern region is a cool-climate gem that delivers aromatic lift, refined texture and serious varietal clarity. The Denmark subregion, nestled close to the Southern Ocean, offers one of the coolest growing climates in the state, and it’s here that Harewood Estate sources its Pinot fruit from carefully selected sites known for low yields and high flavour concentration.
Winemaker James Kellie, a former Howard Park winemaker, has been instrumental in building Harewood’s reputation for precision and site expression. For the Denmark Pinot Noir, the approach is gentle and restrained. Fruit is handpicked and cold-soaked, then fermented with a mix of whole berries and a small portion of whole bunch for aromatic lift and subtle structure. The wine matures in French oak barriques, mostly older, to add finesse without masking the purity of fruit.
In the glass, it’s fragrant with red cherry, wild strawberry, dried rose and a hint of forest floor. There’s a gentle spiciness and an undercurrent of graphite and coastal herb. The palate is elegant, medium-bodied and silky, with fresh acidity and fine-grained tannins offering length and poise.
A perfect match for pan-seared duck breast, mushroom ravioli or beetroot tart with goat’s curd. This wine drinks beautifully now and will evolve gracefully over 5 to 7 years.
