2024 Hentley Farm The Old Legend Grenache, Barossa Valley

The 2024 The Old Legend Grenache leads with savory roasted meat crust, graphite, blueberries and wet steel. In the mouth, the fruit is concentrated and shaped by gritty tannins; the length of it all is impressive. There are notes of rose petals, pomegranate, tobacco, aniseed and dark chocolate. Drink to 2034.

Medium full red with a purple rim; sweetly jammy blackberry and blackcurrant aromas, laced with dried herbs and chaff, possibly from some whole-bunch fermentation. Spicy oak as well adds a chocolaty note. Intense and full of flavour, concentrated dark plum and plush, the finish extra long and quite firm. Drink to 2037.

From a great, classic Barossa vintage, the fruit for this Grenache was estate grown in two east-facing blocks of Hentley Farm’s Seppeltsfield vineyard.

The ferment included 15% whole bunches, and two thirds were left on skins for 60 days of extended maceration. The components were matured for nine months in seasoned French oak before final assembly ahead of bottling.

Hentley Farm was established in 1997 by Keith and Alison Hentschke in the rolling hills of Greenock Creek in the western reaches of the Barossa. Their 150-hectare property sits on a diverse range of soils that coupled with the varying orientations of the land gives them a rich tapestry of fruit styles from their two vineyard sites. Work at the winery has been led by winemaker Andrew Quin since 2008.
