2024 Hither & Yon Vermentino, McLaren Vale

Picked both early in the season and the morning, this was crushed to tank for a cool ferment on skins for two weeks; pressed to old oak to finish alcoholic fermentation and go through mlf; three months' élevage. Cypress and myrtle, wild grasses, tea tree oil, chamomile, Indian tonic, martini olive, lime oil, Vietnamese mint, preserved lemon, coriander seed and grapefruit pith. It’s a briny, maritime wine – like a botanical-infused aperitif – light of weight with a feathery grip and abundant freshness. This is the second release, and the fundamentals are the same, but this steps up in poise and balance. Very good.

This family-run winery, led by brothers Malcolm and Richard Leask, is known for its sustainable viticulture, innovative spirit, and small-batch production. Their Vermentino is grown in biodynamically farmed vineyards just a few kilometres from the Gulf St Vincent, where cooling afternoon breezes help retain natural acidity and bring lift to the fruit.

The winemaking is hands-off and all about freshness. Grapes are picked early and fermented in stainless steel to preserve brightness and aromatics. The result is a dry, crisp wine with texture and a hint of savoury complexity that makes it a standout alternative to Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio.

In the glass, it shows aromas of lime, green apple, lemon balm, and sea spray, with a subtle herbal edge. The palate is light and zippy, with citrus, nashi pear, and a fine chalky texture. A streak of refreshing acidity runs through the finish, leaving you wanting another sip.
