Hughes + Hughes Pinot Noir from Southern Tasmania is a beautifully detailed, vibrant wine that captures the precision and energy of Tasmania’s cool maritime climate. Founded by brothers Jonny and Matt Hughes, the Hughes + Hughes label focuses on minimal-intervention winemaking and small-batch precision, producing wines that are textural, expressive and deeply tied to place. This Pinot Noir is a striking example of their craft bright, fragrant and finely structured, balancing purity of fruit with savoury complexity.
The fruit is sourced from select vineyards across Southern Tasmania, where long, cool growing seasons allow slow ripening and perfect flavour development. The grapes are hand picked and fermented with native yeasts, with a portion of whole bunches included to add aromatic lift and gentle spice. Maturation takes place in seasoned French oak barrels for around ten months, preserving the wine’s freshness and transparency while adding subtle texture and depth.
In the glass it shows a clear ruby hue. The nose is perfumed and complex, offering red cherry, raspberry and cranberry alongside hints of rose petal, spice, and forest floor. On the palate it is elegant and medium bodied, with pure red fruit, fine tannins, and a mineral edge carried by fresh acidity. The finish is long, savoury and seamless, displaying both delicacy and quiet intensity a true reflection of Tasmania’s refined Pinot Noir style.
Hughes + Hughes Pinot Noir pairs beautifully with duck breast, roast chicken, mushroom risotto, or salmon. It also works wonderfully with soft cheeses or dishes featuring herbs and truffle. While delicious in its youth for its brightness and perfume, it will reward cellaring for five to eight years, developing earthy, savoury depth over time.
