2024 JC's Own Bluebird Grenache, Barossa Valley

The JC’s Own Bluebird Grenache from the Barossa Valley is a vibrant, modern expression of one of the region’s oldest and most characterful grape varieties. Jaysen Collins, the winemaker behind JC’s Own, has built his reputation on producing small-batch wines that are playful in spirit yet serious in quality. With Bluebird, he takes old-vine Grenache from sandy soils in the Barossa and crafts a wine that is bright, aromatic and full of energy, offering a fresh perspective on a variety often associated with power and richness.

In the glass it is a vivid ruby red. The nose is fragrant and lifted, with red cherry, raspberry and pomegranate accented by rose petals, white pepper and a hint of earth. The palate is medium-bodied and silky, showcasing juicy red fruits wrapped in fine tannins and bright acidity. A subtle savoury edge and gentle spice add complexity, while the finish is long, clean and refreshingly elegant. This is Grenache made for vibrancy and charm, rather than sheer weight.

Food pairings highlight its aromatic and lively style: duck with cherry glaze, chargrilled quail, lamb koftas with yoghurt, or roasted Mediterranean vegetables. It is also a beautiful match with semi-hard cheeses like Manchego. Best enjoyed young for its brightness, but it has the structure to develop earthy, savoury layers over 5 to 7 years in the cellar.
