Jean Paul et Charly Thévenet Régnié En Voiture Simone Organic is one of the most expressive and joyful wines from this celebrated father and son domaine, showcasing the elegance and purity that organic old vine Gamay can achieve in Régnié. The vineyard sites sit on the higher slopes of the cru, perched over pink granite and coarse sand with pockets of schist. These soils give the wine its lifted aromatics, bright red fruit and beautifully etched mineral backbone. The vines are old, many around fifty to sixty years of age, naturally low yielding and perfectly suited to the Thévenets’ hands off, terroir first philosophy. Their organic farming has long been a signature of the domaine and plays a major role in the remarkable clarity of fruit.
Winemaking follows the traditional Beaujolais approach of semi carbonic fermentation using whole bunches, allowing the wine to retain perfume, vibrancy and supple tannins. Native yeasts handle fermentation and oxygen is carefully managed to protect freshness. Ageing takes place in a combination of neutral French barrels and concrete to enhance texture without overshadowing the delicate Gamay fruit. En Voiture Simone is crafted to express the finesse and charm of Régnié while still carrying the structure needed for several years of development.
In the glass it shows a luminous ruby colour. The nose is wonderfully pure and inviting with aromas of fresh raspberry, red cherry and wild strawberry supported by violet, rose petal, sweet herbs and a subtle granite like minerality. As it opens, hints of cranberry, plum skin, anise and a gentle earthy undertone begin to appear, adding aromatic complexity that reflects the diversity of Régnié’s soils.
The palate is bright, silky and beautifully balanced. Juicy red fruits lead the way with lively acidity and fine, gently grippy tannins giving shape and definition. Flavours of cherry, raspberry, pomegranate, subtle spice, cocoa and a clean stony note unfurl across the mid palate. The finish is long, fresh and delicately savoury with lingering red fruit purity and a subtle mineral echo. It is a wine that offers both immediate charm and the potential to evolve gracefully over five to seven years.
It pairs beautifully with herb roasted chicken, duck confit, grilled pork, mushroom ragù, charcuterie, goat cheese, tomato based pastas and vegetable dishes such as ratatouille. Its freshness and gentle structure make it incredibly versatile across lighter and mid weight dishes.
