2024 Kilikanoon Killerman's Run Watervale Riesling, Clare Valley

Killerman's Run is named for a local hermit who lived in a tin shed in the hills behind the original Kilikanoon property and foraged the valley for his meals. Whether he had good taste in wine we'll never know, but the Riesling named in his honour is a solid argument for Watervale.

Watervale sits at the southern end of Clare Valley, its limestone soils and slightly warmer aspect giving Riesling a generous, fruit-forward character — all lime pith and citrus blossom rather than the more austere styles from further north. The 2024 season ran cool, which sharpened the acidity and kept the wine focused.

Fresh and lively in the glass — lime juice, lemon zest and a whisper of jasmine on the nose, with a chalky mineral thread and bright, mouthwatering acidity on the palate. Dry, clean and direct. Good now, but Clare Riesling at this quality level rewards patience — give it five or six years and it starts to develop the toasty, honeyed complexity that makes the variety worth cellaring.
