Kir Yianni Paranga Red has juicy cherry, plum and savoury spice with soft tannins, fresh acidity and lively Macedonian character.
Kir Yianni was founded in 1997 by Yiannis Boutaris, one of the pivotal figures in the modern Greek wine revival. After leaving the family company, he established his own vineyards in northern Greece, with Naoussa and Amyndeon at the heart of the project. Today his son Stellios Boutaris continues the story. Paranga is the easygoing side of Kir Yianni, made for generous drinking while still carrying plenty of regional personality.
The 2024 Paranga Red combines Merlot with Xinomavro, northern Greece’s great native red variety. Merlot supplies ripe plum and softness, while Xinomavro contributes red fruit, acidity and that distinctive savoury edge. Macedonia’s cooler nights and elevated vineyards help keep the blend fresh, resulting in a juicy, medium bodied red that has flavour without unnecessary weight.
Bright ruby crimson, opening with black cherry, ripe plum and raspberry before violet and redcurrant appear. Xinomavro adds a savoury twist of dried tomato, black olive and oregano, with liquorice and cracked pepper underneath. The palate is juicy and supple, with plum and cherry carried by fresh acidity and soft, gently grippy tannins. Red fruit, herbs and pepper linger through an appetisingly savoury finish.
Lamb kofta with yoghurt and mint would be terrific, alongside grilled eggplant with tomato and feta, chicken souvlaki, mushroom moussaka or charred octopus with oregano and lemon. Our pick is the eggplant, bubbling hot from the oven with plenty of tomato, feta and olive oil.
Cellaring: Drink now to 2030.
