2024 Kumeu River Village Chardonnay, Kumeu Auckland

The first vintage of Village Chardonnay I tasted was from the 2002 vintage and it has been my “house Chardonnay” ever since.

The perfect aperitif Chardonnay, it's a wine that pairs very well with all types of seafood. Fermented 40% in old French oak barriques, and 60% in stainless steel tanks there is very little oak influence on either nose or palate. This has allowed the vibrant fruit to show through beautifully with lively lime and lemon aromas and a flinty, mineral edginess with hints of fig and white peach.

The Village Chardonnay is crafted from hand-picked fruit sourced from vineyards in Kumeu and neighboring regions. The coastal influence and clay-rich soils of the area contribute to the wine’s bright acidity and mineral complexity. This Chardonnay undergoes fermentation in stainless steel and neutral oak barrels, allowing the varietal’s natural fruit character to take center stage while adding subtle depth and texture.

In the glass, the wine displays a pale straw color with green highlights. The nose is inviting, offering aromas of ripe citrus, white peach, and green apple, with subtle hints of flint and toasted almond.

On the palate, the Village Chardonnay is fresh and lively, showcasing flavors of lemon zest, pear, and a touch of stone fruit. A crisp acidity and a soft, creamy texture create a harmonious balance, leading to a clean, refreshing finish.
