The Leeuwin Estate Prelude Chardonnay from Margaret River is a refined and approachable expression of Chardonnay, crafted as the elegant younger sibling to the estate’s iconic Art Series. Leeuwin Estate, founded in the 1970s with the guidance of Robert Mondavi, has long been recognised as one of Australia’s greatest Chardonnay producers. The Prelude range is designed to be enjoyed earlier, while still showing the precision, minerality and finesse that characterise Leeuwin wines. Fruit is sourced from younger vines and select parcels in the estate’s Wilyabrup vineyards, delivering vibrancy and balance.
In the glass it is pale straw with green hues. The nose is fresh and expressive, with aromas of white peach, nectarine and citrus zest lifted by notes of nougat, cashew and a touch of flinty minerality. The palate is medium-bodied and finely textured, showing ripe stone fruit and lemon curd balanced by bright acidity and subtle oak spice. A chalky mineral line carries through to a clean, elegant and refreshing finish.
Food pairings highlight its energy and versatility: grilled scallops with lemon butter, roast chicken with herbs, seafood risotto, or creamy pasta with mushrooms. Soft cheeses such as triple cream brie also pair beautifully. Best enjoyed young for its vibrancy but capable of cellaring for 5 to 7 years, where it will gain savoury, nutty complexity.
