2024 Lievland Bushvine Pinotage, Stellenbosch

From the rolling hills of Stellenbosch, Lievland is part of a new wave of South African producers bringing clarity and freshness to traditional varieties. Pinotage, long associated with bold, rustic styles, is handled here with a lighter touch, especially from bush vines that naturally limit yields and bring concentration without heaviness. The vineyard’s warm days and cooling ocean influence allow the fruit to ripen fully while holding onto a sense of balance.

Bright ruby with a purple edge, the aromatics are open and expressive. Ripe plum, blackberry and cherry lead, followed by hints of cocoa, spice and a gentle earthy note. There is a subtle smokiness, but it sits in the background rather than dominating.

The palate is juicy and approachable, with dark fruit carried by soft, rounded tannins. There is a smooth, almost plush texture, balanced by enough freshness to keep things lively. Notes of spice, a touch of mocha and a faint savoury edge build through the finish, giving it more depth than expected.

This is a great match for flavour driven food. Barbecue meats, slow cooked stews, or dishes with a smoky edge all work beautifully. It also pairs well with spiced dishes where its fruit can balance the warmth.
